I guess I didn't discuss the topic of reindeer and Creepmas...hmmm...think that will have to wait until next year. At any rate, this entry has little to do with Creepmas I guess, other than that it has to do with winter. Let's face it, after celebrating Creepmas and that 'other' holiday, we are faced with the prospect of dark, cold days ahead for quite a spell. Just so you don't forget that, here's a little gal I made to remind you of what really lies ahead....mwahahaha!

Ghosts and Christmas--they seem to go hand in hand. We all know the the story of "The Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens and there are many more. So why do these spirits "walk the earth" at this festive time of year? Simply because this festive time of year is encroaching on THEIR festive time of year--Halloween. I mean, they just manage to crawl their way out of their ghostly abodes at the appropriate time of year when they get a load of "sorry, mates--run along now, Christmas is coming!" Is it any wonder these guys feel a bit miffed and cheated out of their ghostly rights to haunt, moan, and frighten? And in retaliation, is it any wonder that they want to scare the begeezus out of folks as they gather around the Christmas tree? I think not. And just so you can get back a little bit of that old Halloween magic during this festive time of year, take a look at this. Remember The X-Files "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" episode? hehe...

Creepmas Day Eight! Frosty the Snowman

So, time to consider Frosty. I mean, seriously, this poor schmuck deserves some payback. The poor guy has to wait each and every year for some snowfall and then for some kid to put a hat on his head so he can come to life. Now he has to worry about global warming; staying alive is becoming more and more difficult--his chances for a happy but short life are diminishing rapidly.
Thus, I was so pleased to find some video footage of this cold but rotund dude finally being able to dish out what he should.

Of course, there's nothing quite like the Twisted Christmas series. I mean, seriously, if you're a fan of Creepmas, this collection of alternative and slightly bent Christmas figures is de rigueur. They are simply amazing and occupy that most hallowed place of Christmas decorating honor in my house--the mantle.

A sad state of affairs for these pumpkins--shoved to the side in cardboard boxes whilst the trees are lit up and stretching their limbs. Creepmas Day Six! Zombies and the Holidays

Another thing that bothers me is how poorly zombies are treated during the holidays. These zombie folks are no better or worse than they are at any other time of the year; however, people 'out there' see fit to really come down hard on these hapless victims and completely miss the whole point of the holidays--you know, good will to men, the idea that the spirit of kindness should prevail, etc., etc. I shook my head when I saw this video. It's a damn shame.

Fortunately, there is hope on the horizon--looks like someone has finally adapted the book, "A Christmas Carol" just for zombies.

And hope springs eternal from Elvira--watch this heartwarming little video.

It has always disturbed me that so many of our favorite figures and personalities of the Halloween and horror genre are simply put aside and forgotten at the Christmas holidays. For so many 'out there', these fond friends are somehow not welcome around the Christmas tree. Apparently there's something almost sacrilegious and profane about including these well respected but a trifle scary VIP's in our Christmas festivities. Well, now that we can celebrate the Creepmas Hallowdays, our scary friends can really get in the spirit of things!

(once again, a little excerpt from "The Twelve Terrors of Christmas") Yes, indeed, a very nasty thing we humans do each and every Christmas--head out to the ol' tree farm and hack away at evergreen trees that are old enough and big enough to be hacked. It's barbaric really and ever so wasteful or as in the written prelude to "Treevenge" puts it, "...the horrifying reality of the lives of Christmas trees. Clearly, for trees, Christmas isn't the exciting peace on earth that is experienced by most." If you're not too faint of heart, check out "Treevenge" but be warned--the trees win and it isn't pretty! (also--lots of language and gore in this)

Creepmas-Day Two! Santa the Man

So, yesterday we considered the elf issue. Let's get to the heart of the matter--the meat, the main dude--Santa himself--Santa the man. Some food for thought from the same little book by John Updike and delightfully illustrated by Edward Gorey. After you read this, take a look at an alternate version of the dude in red via YouTube.
Chapter one reads, "Loose-fitting nylon beard, fake optical twinkle, cheap red suit, funny rummy smell when you sit on his lap. If he's such a big shot, why is he drawing unemployment for eleven months of the year? Something scary and off-key about him, like one of those Stephen King clowns." Updike goes further in chapter two, "...a man of no plausible address, with no apparent source for his considerable wealth, comes down the chimney after midnight while decent, law-abiding citizens are snug in their beds--is this not, at the least, cause for alarm?"

Creepmas Day One! Some Thoughts on 'Santa's Helpers'

So, just for fun, I'm participating in "Creepmas: A Celebration of the Hallowdays". This little movement, this uprising, this "...reaction to the continuing incursion of Christmas into Autumn and Halloween, CREEPMAS is a good-natured chance for Halloween lovers to exact revenge by bringing some spooky good cheer into the holidays or, more appropriately, the Hallowdays."

For Day One, I thought I'd share an excerpt from a lovely little book I own entitled, "The Twelve Terrors of Christmas" by John Updike and illustrated by the inimitable Edward Gorey. Available at Amazon

"Chapter three reads, "...what is REALLY going on? Why do these purported elves submit to sweatshop conditions in what must be one of the gloomiest climates in the world, unless they are getting something out of it at our expense? Underclass masochism one day, bloody rebellion the next. The rat-a-tat-tat of tiny hammers may be just the beginning...."

Of course, I can completely understand these guys. Elves have it rough and I can empathize with them so much that I envisioned what one of the guys might look like on the day of the great rebellion. I offer up my own sculptural rendition of an "Elf Gone Mad"....not that I'm trying to foment revolution or anything like that...just showing my support for the downtrodden and repressed.

In the midst of my "Halloween From Hell" experience, a ray of sunshine managed to poke through--I discovered that one of my sculpture pieces was selected for inclusion in the new book, "Vampire Art Now" by Jasmine Becket-Griffith and Matthew David Becket and published by HarperCollins. A very cool book with some gorgeous vampire art in it...and I ain't just sayin' that 'cause one of my sculptures is in it; it really is a beautiful coffee-table-lots-of-big-pics-kind of book. The Halloween From Hell

So, in retrospect, I think I bit off more than I could chew. See the pic? A screaming banshee...that's what I pretty much felt like for most of this year's Halloween. Hey, it started off great--beautiful weather, etc., etc. Everything I had been planning and working on for the past YEAR was coming to a delightfully expectant and right-on-target finale. My Haunted Forest, my "Deadwoods" walk-through haunt looked to be a smashing success, except for the fact that I just really didn't realize how much extension cords cost--and while we already had a good supply, it wasn't enough to cover the 250 feet from the nearest electrical outlet to my haunt location and it's many requirements for spotlights. So, about $500 later, I had enough lights and cords. And then, the 'nor easter' hit--cold, rain, and wind. The tent that was my witches hovel, went over, smashing many of the bottles, etc., so I had to start all over on that. Then, it poured Saturday night so that 'performance' of the haunt had to be cancelled. So, Sunday, rolls around and while it's cold, it's clear and sunny. Cool. Then, one of my actors leaves the door open and one of my cats disappears. All work stops for a couple hours and I am a complete basket case (I love my cats and yes, we did find him). Finally, it's showtime and yes, people showed up (altho' not as many as last year--too bloody cold--at least for those of us who inhabit The South) and had a great time at the haunt. So, after the evening's festivities come to a close, I'm feeling better--all my actors showed up, folks loved it, etc. I go out in the cold to take pics and the next morning I load 'em on the computer and lo and behold, halfway through, the computer decides it doesn't like the way the pics are loading and half of them disappear, kaput! In the meantime, my husband has been taking all the lighting down so another photography session is out of the question. So, I make do and smile (seriously? no, I did not smile, altho' I tried). Here we go, then--and this is a good one--I move a lot of the props that shouldn't get wet into the big tent for the night, intending to pack them up the next day. A slight chance of light showers is forecast. Okay, a few drops fall and then a few more. By midnight, all Hell is breaking loose and it's raining cats and dogs. I think, hey, maybe you should go out and check the tents and I do and OMG, the rain has stretched the top of the tents to the max (like halfway down to the blinkin' ground and I am envisioning the Atlantic Ocean blasting into my tent in much the same way that it did in that most majestic ship, "The Titanic"). I race back to the house, pounding on doors to wake my kin, "Help! The tents are collapsing! Get up!" After much struggle and sweat, we manage to heave the water off and for the rest of the night, I go out into the bloody monsoon every bloody half hour until four in the morning to rid the tops of the tents of water which then proceeds to flood onto the ground and my props are soaked anyway. Sigh. So, yesterday was spent trying to salvage what I could and I think most of my 'stuff' will end up ok but will I ever do another 'whatever the weather' haunt? Nope. Sadly, I feel rather like I missed Halloween entirely this year and while I completely accept the stress that usually goes along with setting up a Halloween display, this one was a kicker--it robbed me of what I truly love about Halloween--that it is a holiday unto itself--it is like no other; it celebrates death and darkness and makes light of it; it both lessens and enhances our fear of the unknown; it's FUN for fun's sake; when being scared makes us laugh in the end. I don't know, maybe I'm laughing a little bit 'cause I think, "Damn! How much worse could things bloody well get this year?" It's a blinkin' comedy of errors and misfortune. Dark stuff. Then, again, it's HALLOWEEN. It's supposed to be dark stuff. Maybe it's just a test...

Very cool prop--the artist told me a bit about the construction: "I used a mask of an old hag that I created about a year ago, I put it on a body I created out of...PVC skeleton with styrofoam core mass covered in paper and starch then I painted her and added a few layers of latex to her arms neck and chest for the skin look. I sculpted her left arm and hand and made a latex copy, her right arm is foam tape latex and paint."

Well, it was an interesting four days dealing with this bloody hurricane. Had to evacuate my horses 'cause my house and barn are surrounded by BIG trees (we grow 'em big around here--see that pic?) Trying to pack up enough gear and supplies for 2 horses, multiple cats, dogs and 3 reptiles ain't easy (ain't easy hiding 'em in a hotel room, either--not the horses, though. got them boarded at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington) Then, sitting in traffic for HOURS trying to get out of this freakin' area before Irene blew in was less than delightful, to say the least. Now it's clean up time--we were lucky and only lost two big trees and they both fell away from the house and barn so no structural damage. Big mess though and a lot of work.

Drum roll..... ta daa!!! Husband has pretty much finished the hearse!!! Wasn't going to put pics up until I had completed the curtains, put the coffin in the back and stuck the skelly coachman up in front with the ghost horse but I just can't stand it! Hubby is not a Halloween nutter like his wife but he chips in 100% with trying to comply with his wife's imagination and crazy requests. I'm very proud of hubby--he put this together with no blueprints, just internet pictures--and designed the hearse so that it can be completely disassembled for storage!

As I was making my way out of the back room and past the stairs I heard what clearly sounded like old leather soled shoes on wood walking with haste. I started to turn around to tell, who I was sure was a policeman or neighbor telling me I was trespassing and to vacate the premises, that I was indeed on my way out. However, no one was in sight. Once I turned around the footsteps stopped.

Needless to say, my exit was a bit more expeditious than I initially planned!"

Haven't sculpted much lately but did manage to finish this one. Sort of a steampunk creation--the poor girl needs only her head and her heart to provide blood to the 'machine'. Polymer clay sculpt, antique silverplate pickle jar holder (I think that's what it is), tiny glass jars filled with resin 'blood', antique trim, antique brass number plate and other found objects. This piece is also lit from underneath to illuminate the pool of blood and the heart contained in the glass globe.

So, yesterday I watched Lars von Triers "Antichrist". This is not horror in the classic sense--it goes far beyond. The discomfort and emotionally drained feeling I had after watching this still has not left me. It is visual, it is disconcerting and it is horrible and yet, I still highly recommend it. "While I was playing with my mum's camera earlier, I decided to go outside and take a picture of Mr. Bones. Our favorite Halloween decoration that was in our family's haunted house when we had it. I think my family did it two years, before my mum didn't want to do it any more.
Now, Mr. Bones lives in our green house. Scaring away the birds. That's the only bad side of him, once you get to know him. He's pretty nice. XD"

Grieving

Haven't been around much for the past couple weeks--been caring for a very special and beloved pet who lost the final battle and is now just alive in my thoughts. I'm the kind of person who loves my 'animals' and prefers their company over and above that of most human animals. I've been having a very difficult time coping with this, partially because it came out of nowhere; he was only 8 years old--way too young for this; and within two weeks, my little guy was gone from some kind of virulent cancer. Still don't have the final test results in and after nearly $2,000 dollars and several specialist vets, I still don't know what the hell happened. So, I am grieving a lot and just wanted all of you to know why I've not been commenting much lately. (Pictures taken by my daughter.)
